Rocky & Zumi review Purina + ‘Paws for the Planet’ Giveaway!by , Posted June 20th 2012

People love to spoil their pets! No matter how a pet misbehaves, all it takes is that ‘I’m sorry’ look on their little faces for all to be forgiven. As members of our family we want to treat our little critters the best we can, but sometimes it seems like there are too many choices to make, especially when it comes to food. As a dog and cat owner, I’ve spent time trying to find a food for each that would offer them the right nutrition to meet their needs and most importantly, one that they both like. Purina graciously offered us the opportunity to review Purina One ‘Smart Blend chicken & rice formula for dogs and Friskies Indoor canned cat food. While Rocky (my dog) is far from picky, Zumi (my cat) seems to have a more refined palette, so I was looking forward to letting my critics try out Purina for a change. Zumi is notorious for opening cat (& dog) food bags himself if left unattended (he can easily open a new bag in a minute) so I was curious to see how excited he would be to tear this one open. As expected, it didn’t take him long…
With voracious appetites, no matter what time of day, these two were eager to get a taste of what was inside.
Both Rocky and Zumi loved their food and since both Purina brands passed the ‘taste’ test, it was up to me to take a closer look at Purina’s ‘Smart Blend’ dry food for dogs, to see just how nutritious it claims to be. With so many smaller pet food brands on the market, now more than ever competition is fierce and pet owners are looking closer at what’s actually in the food they’re buying. I’ve heard over and over again that the first ingredient listed should be real meat, not by-product of any type. Upon checking with the ‘Smart Blend’ dog formula, ‘chicken’ is thankfully the first ingredient along with recognizable vitamins E, A, B12, zinc, folic acid, biotin and calcium. One thing that I noticed this food was lacking, were more ‘whole’ ingredients such as fruits and vegetables. Since vitamins are being added to the food in supplement form, there might not be a need for those extra ‘real’ foods, but it would have been reassuring to see them added. Rocky’s current brand is ‘Halo’ which has a wide variety of ingredients such as eggs, peas, barley, apples, blueberries, etc. and actually have real dried peas and carrots mixed in with the food. I think if Purina is looking to make changes in the future, they might consider adding more recognizable ingredients to their formulas to give it that extra boost. Rocky did love Purina’s Smart Blend for dogs and since it includes real chicken and a range of vitamins to support a healthy lifestyle, I can’t argue with that.
So what’s the verdict?
Purina is ‘Rocky & Zumi’ approved and I give it the thumbs up for giving my pets a satisfying meal that gives them exactly what they need!
